Mario Pires Cordeiro - Bio
Mário Pires Cordeiro, born in 1975 in Lisbon, Portugal, is an artist based in San Francisco, California. He received his MFA at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London and completed two years of a PhD researching color trends in fine arts. MPC participated in the London alternative art scene for six years. He has been commissioned by the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Cape Farewell Foundation. In 2015, he moved to California. MPC’s art develops the relationship between fine art and design, commenting on the interaction between visual art and functional products through experimentation in media and color. Color is the main focus of MPC’s art, unpacking the symbolic and cultural meaning imposed on color in contemporary society while utilizing color trends to anticipate the trajectories of today’s chromatic practices. He often works with seasonal color forecasts for interior or product design. He draws inspiration from architecture, geometry, nature, and space travel, speaking to the way we as humans engage with our world of shapes. He works with a variety of media from painting and sculpting to film and 3D printing.

I have been welding for over 4 years and since then, I have never been able to put down the torch even after work hours. My garage slowly turned into my own art studio, collecting scrap metal from the neighborhood and trying to create sculptures to put in my family garden. My first welding job was at International Containers where I was making garbage cans and shipping containers. I felt like I can construct anything since I was working with extremely heavy metal. In trying to expand my knowledge I took an paid internship in Paterson, New Jersey, fabricating metal furniture which lead me to my next job at Quest Events. At Quest Events I prepared metal stage frames and customized 3D logos. The 3D logos really taught me a lot about metal fabrication and the support materials need to hold siren weights. In the past 4 years I have created over 20 sculptures with 13 of them being my own furniture designs.I love to create and craft something with a challenge. The outcome of the finished product is so rewarding. To finally complete a project, step back and see that I made a one of a kind master piece that I can call my own is amazing. It gives me a confidence that allows me to push myself harder and believe that I can successful and achieve much more.

My experience has enabled me to use research, ideation, and testing to mine insights for user problems. Nature is my source of inspiration. I design with respect to what humans can use, and what nature can digest.

I’ve lived almost all my life in the East Bay, attended the Wood Technology trade school program at Laney, and have spent decades since building furniture. My desire to mix wood and metal in my designs brought me to The Crucible, where I now enjoy being a teacher of wood, and a student of metal. I love sharing what turns me on about these dynamic materials, and helping people chase their creative goals.
