Virtual Artist Talk: Creating Culture Through Ceramics With Rosa Dorantes

Please join us Friday, April 17 for our third iteration of our virtual artist talk series. We’ll be sitting down with Ceramics Department Head, Rosa Dorantes, an accomplished artist with over two decades of ceramics experience. Since Rosa became The Crucible’s Department Head of Ceramics, she has transformed the space into a sanctuary that keeps students coming back.

PLEASE NOTE: During this talk, we’ll be discussing parts of the body and pieces that engage with explicit language. Parents and families should decide if they’re comfortable participating in the talk.

Meet The Artist:

Rosa Dorantes

Crucible Ceramics Department Head, Rosa Dorantes, has been working in ceramics for more than two decades. Her first introduction was in a 7th grade art class with an influential teacher—she was hooked!

Dorantes was born and raised in Oakland to her mother and father who immigrated from Nicaragua and Mexico respectively. Much of her work has reflected themes of womanhood, personal experience, and family. As the Ceramics Department Head, Rosa has made it her mission to create a safe and welcoming space for students, fostering a freedom to experiment and explore ideas.

“For me, coming to The Crucible is my journey really coming full circle,” She said in a 2019 interview. “Now, I get to share my passion for ceramics with my community, while being immersed in the greater arts community at The Crucible.”
