Like most things, we weren’t sure our Fuego Youth Leadership Program would run this summer. But with modifications to shelter-in-place orders, the introduction of new health and safety guidelines in our studio, and funding from our program sponsors, we’re excited to announce we’re moving forward with a streamlined version.
The Crucible is excited to announce that we will also be able to start offering a small number of adult classes—with new health and safety policies in place in accordance with the most up-to-date orders defined by the Alameda County Public Health Department, under the guidance of the state.
Centering this moment on leadership from people of color and those most directly impacted by what is happening is essential to us. We honor our local and national leaders of color and encourage you to join us in supporting the call for justice.
After running our budget projections and considering the costs of new, smaller class sizes for the foreseeable future, as well as the necessary safety and sanitation expenses to facilitate a safe re-opening, we know we cannot continue to operate with the same number of staff we would normally.

Please join us Friday, June 5, for our next virtual artist talk with Crucible faculty member, Rob Nehring, of our Welding Department. Rob has been a part of The Crucible community since the early 2000s when he traveled from Chicago to take his first class. Since then, Rob has held all kinds of positions within our organization, from volunteer to Director of Programs. We’ll discuss Rob’s body of work and the importance of using recycled materials to create his sculptures.

Nico is a Ph.D. student in the Teaching and Learning Department at NYU Steinhardt and the Fuego Youth Leadership Coordinator at The Crucible.
This past week, Alameda county extended its shelter-in-place order through May 31, meaning The Crucible will remain closed for at least another month. While we miss gathering with our creative community more than anything, there has been one benefit to our studio closure.
During this Virtual Artist Talk, Oakland artist and fire performer, Lara Hopwood will discuss her early introduction to fire dance, how she goes about planning a fire performance, and dive deep into some of the different techniques she loves and admires.
Today would have been The Crucible’s Fire & Light Soirée and Art Auction, our annual fundraiser that generates over $250,000 to fund scholarships and support for our industrial arts education programs.
