Earn-A-Bike 2021 Program Gives West Oakland Youth New Confidence

For more than a decade, West Oakland students ages 10-18 have been participating in our Earn-A-Bike Program, learning free bike mechanics while fixing up two frames. Upon finishing the program, participants take one bike home and donate the second to be sold in support of the Bike Shop.

We are excited to be restarting our Earn-A-Bike Program this February 16, as a newly designed 4-week program, running Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3-6pm. The Crucible’s Bike Shop has been operating with new health and safety policies in place, successfully running multiple Bike Fix-A-Thons and Bike Maintenance classes for our local community.

2020; it’s a year we won’t soon forget. A year that impacted our entire community, friends, families, and neighbors. But it was also a testament to the dedication of The Crucible’s staff, faculty, and volunteers. When we closed our doors in March we had no idea what this year would look like, but our team stood by and stepped up, adjusting to new studio practices, leading our modified classes, and sharing their creativity with youth and adult students from around the Bay Area.

Simha Furaha Has A Backup Plan While The Crucible Hot Shop Is Closed

Two years after taking his first Crucible class, Simha Furaha stepped into the Hot Shop and fell in love with Glass Blowing. From 2018-19, he was a Fuego Youth Leader in that department, helping summer camp instructors teach youth students while also working on his craft with a mentor.
