We will be hosting an expo of several amazing community organizations that bring vital and important services to our diverse neighborhood, and an art show highlighting the talents of our students and faculty. Our Open House is a wonderful way to experience many of the fabulous things West Oakland has to offer. This is a family-friendly event with circus and fire performances, food and fun for all ages and the best part – it’s FREE!

Event Activities Include:
• an expo of amazing organizations committed to serving the Oakland community
• exciting live industrial art demonstrations in welding, glass working, blacksmithing and more
• a fiery metal pour in our foundry
• hands-on activities for all ages
• a spectacular art show showcasing the creativity of Crucible students
• fabulous live performances of fire, music and dance
• the opportunity to interact with our instructors and students to learn more about The Crucible and our classes

We’ll also have the opportunity for folks who sign up for classes that day to take advantage of a fabulous discount!  Crucible members will receive a 25% discount and new students will receive a 20% discount off regular class tuition.

Fees and Payment
There are no entry fees. For work that is for sale, all payments (cash and checks) will be made out directly to each artist. However, we ask that each artist give a 20% donation of sales to The Crucible’s general fund. If you are unable to attend the open house, we still encourage you to submit your work. Unsold work and payments can be picked up during the times listed below.

Artwork Drop-Off: The Crucible’s Main Office • Tuesday, September 7th – Thursday, September 9 • 10AM-6PM 
All pieces must be

labeled or they will not be accepted. 

NO pieces will be accepted after September 9th!

Unsold artwork pick up days and times: Monday, September 13 – Thursday, September 16 • 10AM – 6PM (Any piece of artwork not picked up by 6PM on Thursday, 9/16/10, will be disposed of, unless otherwise arranged.)

Fall Open House Exhibitor Information

The Crucible will host an open house on September 11, 2010 and we are seeking local community-based organizations to join us in our fourth Community Open House event. The Open House will run from 12-4 pm and we have limited booths and tables for community based organizations.

We hope to serve as a community resource to promote a daylong open house for community-based organizations serving West Oakland.  We are inviting local residents, as well as, our Crucible community to take advantage of the wide range of programming found within Oakland. We invite community-based organizations to join us for this community-building event.

Our Open House events draw 500 attendees and offers live demonstrations of our fine and industrial arts. We have a limited number of 10Ă—10 booths and 6Ă—8 tables, which are available on a first come, first serve basis. Electricity can be provided. We invite organizations to bring materials, collateral and banners. Organizations are welcomed to sell items during this time as well. We will feature this Community Open House in our newsletters, on our website and in our printed materials.

Set up begins at 10:30 a.m. and the open house ends at 4 p.m. We will not be able to accommodate any late set ups beyond 11: 30 a.m.  We have an online submission form, Click Here to Apply. We welcome you to join us for this exciting event. Please respond by August 26, 2010.

We believe in being good neighbors and through community support, we can continue the work we’ve started. There is no place like West Oakland and together we can continue to make our neighborhood a place where art thrives.

Demos, Discounts and Drinks!

Converge with Crucible faculty at our industrial arts facility to ignite your creativity. Instructors will be on hand to divulge age-old techniques in jewelry making, hot metal foundry pours and neon. You will learn how artists, limited only by what they can imagine, use these techniques to transform a lump of cold hard metal or glass into an amazing work of art. Works by these artists will be on display, and you can enjoy adult libations from our bar while hanging out with some interesting and inventive folks. Check out information about our great classes, and if you’re a new student or Crucible member, you can also get discounts for class tuition.

Music for this evening’s event will be provided by Billy Hiebert.

2010 Spring Open House

Celebrating Student and Faculty Art

Saturday, April 17, 2010 • 12 to 4PM
FREE Admission

Join us this Saturday afternoon as we roll open our doors to show you what we are all about!

Don’t Miss…

Demonstrations:
We will have live demonstrations happening all through out our studio and invite you to explore our space, experience live demos and feel free to ask staff, faculty and volunteers questions. This year our Stone Carving yard is open in the back lot, just follow the signs through our rental studios to out back.

Fire Demos:
We will be having students from our Art of Fire Dancing class show off their skills spinning fiery poi as well as a fire eating and breathing demo.

Open Studios:
This year our private studio renters are opening their studios up for all to see. Check out their work and workspaces.

Art Show:
There will be an art show featuring work from Crucible students, faculty and staff. Don’t miss the neon pieces on display in our Caboose as well as through out the main event space.

Class Discount:
The hottest part of our open house is a 20% off class tuition discount for spring classes available Saturday only for Members and New Students. To receive the discount you must register at the Open House Registration Desk.

Drawings:
There will be a drawing for free vintage Crucible event t-shirts as well as free tuition on a Crucible Class. Fill out the entries at the front entrance when you get here.

Bicycle Shop:
We will have bicycles for all ages and sizes for sale in our Bike Shop on Saturday too. If you need a new ride, stop by and support our bike program with your purchase. They’re perfect for the playa!

Youth Summer Camp Tour:
At 12:10 sharp we will be doing a tour of our facility, pointing out the amazing classes for youth this summer. Please sign up before hand, as space is limited.

Take our Youth Summer Camp Preview Tour on April 17, 2010 at 12PM

If you know a young artist (ages 8 to 18) who might enjoy a class at The Crucible, here’s your chance to find out more about our youth classes and camps and the people who teach them.  On April 17, 2010 at 12:10PM, The Crucible  is hosting a tour for families who are interested in our classes, workshops, and camps. This introduction to The Crucible includes a tour of the facility from 12:10 to 1:10PM. Set during our Open House, families can then enjoy all of our exciting demonstrations.

The Crucible offers courses not available in schools, typical summer camps or art programs. Here young people 8 to 18 learn to bend metal, shape glass, and control fire; exploring electronics, art, science and much more through

Halloween Family Fun Weekend classes offer a family member discounted tuition when you take a class together. The tuition is for one adult and one child age 12 and up. As far as family goes, you define family, not us.
