Earlier this year, a dozen women gathered for the bi-annual Women’s Blacksmithing Workshop. The Crucible offers this special workshop – taught by women, for women – to cover the fundamentals of blacksmithing and forging steel.

2013 Playa Bound: Sale & Open HouseJune 22, 2013 Our annual Playa Bound Open House is a wonderful way for the whole family to wander through our 56,000 sq. ft. studio and a maze of vendors with handmade crafts, desert costumes, camping supplies, playa bikes, shade ideas, and leave-no-trace education. East Bay Open Studios 2013June 1-2 and June 8-9, 2013 The Crucible is participating in this year’s East Bay Open Studios, presented annually by ProArts Gallery. Featured artists include Barbara Barnett, Peter Kropf, Johanna Neaderhouser, Rob Nehring, Alexander Smith, Daniel Stauber, Sam Waller and Mary B. White. The Crucible will also lead two studio tours at 12 noon and at 4pm.

On Saturday, June 22, 2013 The Crucible will host a curated industrial art exhibit in a gallery setting during the annual Playa Bound Open House & Sale. Any artist utilizing techniques taught at The Crucible is eligible and welcome to submit their metal, wood, glass, neon, jewelry, molded and textile work for consideration.
Our Playa Bound Open House celebrates the approaching annual desert community art extravaganza – Burning Man. The studio will be a maze of vendors with handmade crafts, desert costumes, camping supplies, playa bikes, shade ideas, and leave-no-trace education. The Open House will feature live industrial art demonstrations, fire art performance, class discounts, food and beverage, and more. The exhibit will be set up in the upstairs performance room overlooking the central event space.

The submission process is open to anyone involved with The Crucible including students, faculty, volunteers, studio renters, Create Program members and staff.

Barry Baldwin, founder of The Crucible’s Stone Carving program, is a legend. A stone carver since age 16, Barry has toured the world for his craft, working everywhere from Beirut, Lebanon to Trafalgar Square.

We love Maker Faire! A celebration of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness, the festival brings makers together to showcase their wares, inspire creativity, and most of all – to have fun. Check out a few pictures of our exhilarating weekend!
The Crucible kicked off Maker Faire with the festival’s Education Day. With a blacksmithing demonstration by Celeste Flores, an art bike build by Maurice Cavness, and an interactive Fire Poofer extravaganza by Peter Kropf, we had an awesome time showing 2,500 Bay Area youths the wonders of the maker world. After Education Day, we celebrated the weekend with makers from all over the nation and the world.
