Printing a 52-page catalog uses a lot of trees. And trees are awesome! So instead of making our traditional catalog, we're moving in a new direction. What would have been our 2020 volume 2 catalog has been reimagined [cue sparkly sound effect].

We are so thrilled to welcome four new members to The Crucible Board of Directors in 2020: Jana Pastena, Jeremy Sugerman, Taj Wilson, and Karyn Flynn. Expanding and diversifying our board was crucial to ensure we had varied experiences and perspectives involved in our highest level of decision making.

It’s hard to believe 20 years have passed since establishing our first (and much smaller) studio in Berkeley. We kicked off 2019 with a renewed dedication to expanding class offerings, adding dozens of new options and bringing back several old favorites. We also expanded our Fuego Youth Leadership Program and introduced the first in a three-year OUSD grant-funded partnership with McClymonds High School.
Using a 3D printer for fabrication has become increasingly popular and allows artists and makers to create complex and intricate shapes that would be difficult to create by hand. We’re about to wrap on our latest eight-week session of Digital Fabrication and Foundry. During class, students learned to build 3D models and print multiple test pieces before committing to their final design, which they cast into metal in our Foundry last week. Celeste Flores fell in love with blacksmithing in art school, but it wasn’t until she came to The Crucible that she decided to become a full-time metalworker. “I’ve been rejected for my appearance and for being unconventional and in those environments, I wasn’t able to thrive,” she says. But The Crucible was a welcoming and supportive place for her, both as an artist and an entrepreneur.
Thank you to everyone who braved the storms this weekend and made it out to GIFTY 2019! Staff, faculty, and volunteers came together to make our studio shine, and all the months of effort by our vendors leading up to GIFTY fully paid off. The wide range of beautiful and hand-crafted goods, from jewelry to candles to embroidery kits, were the best and brightest collection we've ever had!
