Oakland is a city known for its art—it's often listed as one of the main attractions for visitors. Normally, we have the privilege of seeing art come to life in our studio on a daily basis. But since our own studio is shut down, we're looking for new, creative ways to engage with Oakland while staying safe.
Printing a 52-page catalog uses a lot of trees. And trees are awesome! So instead of making our traditional catalog, we're moving in a new direction. What would have been our 2020 volume 2 catalog has been reimagined [cue sparkly sound effect].
It’s hard to believe 20 years have passed since establishing our first (and much smaller) studio in Berkeley. We kicked off 2019 with a renewed dedication to expanding class offerings, adding dozens of new options and bringing back several old favorites. We also expanded our Fuego Youth Leadership Program and introduced the first in a three-year OUSD grant-funded partnership with McClymonds High School.
At GIFTY 2019, dozens of leading East Bay artists, craftspeople, and Crucible faculty members will be selling their best handmade pieces in a holiday celebration of local creative culture. There is a rumor going around that if you hang out at The Crucible after dark, you might just catch a ghost passing through our haunted train caboose. We can't promise you will have any ghostly encounters on Halloween night, but we do promise to have some of the tastiest chocolate around.

We were thrilled to host nearly 1,600 visitors to our studio over the weekend for our 2019 Fall Open House. Industrial arts enthusiasts of all ages took to hands-on activities like wet welding, stone carving, and Shibori Indigo Dyeing.

On Saturday night, The Crucible community gathered for our 20th Anniversary Fire & Light Soirée and Art Auction, contributing over $240,000 in support of The Crucible’s industrial arts programming, by bidding on 17 different works of art in the auction and through direct donations to our programming.
