Since 1999, The Crucible has brought our community of artists, neighbors, families, students, and makers together for events ranging from artists’ talks and demos to fire performances, benefits, and community open houses. For updates about all upcoming events, subscribe to our newsletter.

The Crucible is offering free, community bike maintenance and education to West Oakland and neighboring community members through our quarterly Bike Fix-A-Thons, Open Bike Shop Hours, Femme Bike Night, and Flat Fix Clinics. Drop off your bike for a tune-up or learn basic bike maintenance skills from our faculty and volunteers. We are also leading offsite events at other West Oakland locations.

Free Crucible Tours

Join us for a free, semi-monthly Crucible tour! Learn about the history of our 56,000-square-foot studio, the art and artists that make our space unique, and our nonprofit mission to keep the industrial and fine arts accessible to all.

To accommodate different schedules, tours alternate between Saturday afternoons at 2pm and Thursday evenings at 6pm.

Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis in person. Feel free to RSVP on Eventbrite: Free Crucible Tours! RSVPs made through Eventbrite are for reminder purposes only and do not act as a reservation. Tours are subject to cancellation.

Please note: a portion of the tour requires the use of stairs.

She was greatly influenced by the experience of growing up in central North Carolina with a family history of tobacco, cotton and moonshining. She has a diverse education including studies at Penland Craft School, the Evergreen State College – where she received her BFA in metalwork, and through multiple apprenticeships. She has a strong belief in arts education and in empowering youth through exploring industrial arts. Her greatest creative influences come from Japanese folk art and architecture and from old industrial structures. His art is uniquely organic, using fire to enhance and complete the sculpture and engage his audience in a physical way. Charles is a founding member of the Flaming Lotus Girls and has helped the group create fiery art for the past eight years. He founded the Illumination Project, creating monumental kinetic sculptures for the opening of Treasure Island SF, The Santa Rosa Museum of Visual Art, Reno Art Town, and Burning Man. His art has been displayed at Burning man, Robodock in Amsterdam, and the Big Day Out Festival in Australia. He interprets age old traditional form and technique, while creating modern works of art. Zachary is dedicated to uncovering the mysteries of glass, and his vessel designs continue to evolve. A Bay Area native, he has traveled extensively to mentor with some of the world’s most accomplished glass artists, including Dale Chihuly, Richard Royal, Paul Desomma, and Michael Davis. Zachary also teaches at The Crucible. zachrudolphglass.com   page up Red, Black & Yellow Frit Bowl cast glass spun with glass frit Value: $3,500 As a graduate student in architecture at the University of California at Berkeley, John Lewis was introduced to blown glass by professor Marvin Lipofsky. John founded the first private hot glass studio in California and later received his MA in design in 1970. His early work in blown glass led to an interest in glass casting. With the help of a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, he built an experimental facility to explore the possibilities of cast glass. At his state-of-the-art casting studio in Oakland, Lewis designs and produces cast glass sculpture, tables, vessels, and site-specific architectural projects. Fireside Lounge: Rosie the Riveter

This girl power–filled event will host an industrial art show, fire performances, an appearance from the B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls, music by DJ Mancub from the Space Cowboys, fire sculptures, an appearance from the Rosie The Riveter Trust with three original Rosies, discounts on Crucible classes and live industrial arts demonstrations highlighting welding, machine shop, moldmaking and foundry. Mix with actual Rosies from World War II and learn more about female industrial artists playing their role in history. Patrons are encouraged to dress in their finest 1940s inspired garb. There will even be a Rosie The Riveter costume contest. Bring your own bandana and the Rosie The Riveter Trust will teach you how to tie your bandana like Rosie. Also enjoy a performance art piece dedicated to Rosie. Food will be available from Michael Brown Catering, as well as cupcakes from Idle Hands Bakery. Discounts on Crucible class tuition will be available to attendees who register at the event. New students will receive 20% off class tuition and Crucible members will receive 25% off class tuition. In addition, guests can put their $10 cover charge towards the cost of the class. A door prize raffle and the costume contest will also offer attendees a chance to winning free tuition on a Crucible class. All ages are welcome. The Sphere The Sphere created in 1982 by Billy Hiebert is 4 ft across and composed of 20 individual sections. Spheres are one of the strongest and most perfect forms known in nature and Billy’s piece is a metaphor for all of us who have ever felt the need to safely hide the expression of our creativity from the world. Our open houses are a wonderful way to experience the excitement of The Crucible’s 56,000 sq. ft. studio, where furnaces roar and sparks fly. Check out exciting live demonstrations including welding, glass working, metal casting, blacksmithing and much much more. Catch amazing fiery performances and wander through our student and faculty art show displaying the creativity of The Crucible. Then grab a drink and snack and take the Summer Camp preview tour. During our Open House we will have demonstrations in every room with instructors and students on hand to answer any questions you may have. Art Show Every spring we like to show off what we do here with a spectacular art show. We will have pieces from Crucible staff, students, faculty and volunteers showcasing all the fabulous industrial arts classes we teach here. During the open house we will ask visitors to vote on their favorite top three pieces and awards those artists with free tuition on a Crucible class of their choice. Handmade Art for Sale This year we will have Crucible artists on hand selling their beautiful handmade art. Currently we have Tara Murray Art Glass, Nightside Studios, Red Frog Metal Design, Rusty Noodle and many more. Summer Camp Preview Tour As most parents are well aware, summer is just around the corner and the frantic search for something cool to keep their youngsters engaged has begun. This is an excellent time to learn more about out The Crucible’s summer camp experience! This tour will focus specifically on what classes we offer for budding artists ages 8-17. This Fireside Lounge is the first in a series of four evening events planned by The Crucible. Future evenings include a Rosie the Riveter theme showcasing women in industrial art and Play Bound theme for those looking to head off to Black Rock City in the summer. Guests will enjoy live demonstrations of and mini lectures on blacksmithing, neon, jewelry and enameling throughout The Crucible studio, as well as a spectacular art exhibition showcasing student and faculty art in those featured areas. Aerialist Oliver Pavick will play the saucy flying Cupid. Local poet Zach Houston will flow with free verse hand-typed poems. Learn your future with tarot readings by Isabelle Choiniere-Correa and enjoy tasty treats from Jon’s Street Eats and Idle Hands Barkery. Crucible Revival

The Crucible’s 12th Anniversary Benefit January 14 & 15, 2011 • 7-11pm (Doors open at 7pm and show starts at 8pm) Press Release A fiery benefit for The Crucible’s educational programs honoring the work of our founder, Michael Sturtz To mark the departure of Crucible Founder Michael Sturtz from his role on The Crucible’s staff, we are celebrating his vision and creativity by bringing back the show-stopping greatest hits of performances past. The Crucible’s 12th Anniversary Benefit is a Revival – Crucible style. In the tradition of the theater, we are reviving our most beloved and spectacular moments. As for the traditional revival meeting – our approach may be irreverent but our objectives are pure: we’re seeking to engage and inspire our most loyal members and friends and to end each night with a new legion of Crucible converts. Join Master of Ceremonies Mark Growden as he soulfully sings his way through a fast paced, jaw dropping line-up of music, dance, aerial, fire and much more. Expect reprisals of unforgettable moments from Crucible stage shows, stunning surprises and plenty of fire from a veritable Who’s Who of Bay Area favorites, including many Crucible friends and collaborators. We’ll also be showcasing the industrial arts in a whole new light as only The Crucible can. Faculty and students will perform amazing feats with glass, metal, fire and more. He also studies with Sheikh Sherif Baba, head of the Rifai Marufi Order. More information… Dan Cantrell Dan Cantrell began composing at age 11. Since that time he has continued performing and writing music of all kinds featuring his main instruments, accordion, piano and musical saw. Dan received a rigorous training in Classical, Jazz, and improvisational performance styles as well as extensive formal composition training from an early age. He attended the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), and the Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts studying piano performance and musical composition. Drawing from his rich musical experience, he strives to bring exciting new sounds to the world in collaboration and composition for interdisciplinary art. In recent years his attention has been focused on the study and performance of Eastern European folk music as well as compositions for film, dance, and theatre. In recent years, Dan has composed the soundtrack to the television series Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, currently on the Cartoon Network. Dan received an Emmy award for his soundtrack to KQED documentary Home Front, as well two Golden Gate awards from the San Francisco International Film Festival for his work on local films As a performer, Dan recently had the honor of recording with legendary songwriter Tom Waits and composed and performed the Rootabaga Opera at The Crucible’s 2009 Fire Arts Festival. Call for Entries: “Aural Machina“ DEADLINE: Tuesday, November 16, 2010. Exhibition Dates: Dec 16 – Feb 4 Guest Juror: Daniel Yasmin The Crucible’s Cathedral Gallery is looking for Bay Area artists to participate in our upcoming group sculpture exhibit Aural Machina. We seek sculptural works of art that produce sound and can be considered an “instrument” – and we are open to any interpretation of what an instrument is. Both traditional and experimental work will be considered as long as the work is constructed by hand and made with the intention to create sound.  We especially encourage artists with work that has an interactive element to apply. Eligibility: •    Artwork submitted must be 3D or have a 3D sculptural element. •    Artist(s) must be living and/or working in the Bay Area. •    Artwork must be able to fit through a standard door (80” x 36”). •    The artwork submitted must be available for the listed exhibition dates. Submission Materials: •    Completed Submission Form – Download Submission Form •    Artist Statement and Biography for each artist (1 page max, portrait requested) •    Up to 5 IMAGES of artwork. (5 maximum permitted.) –    Submit ONE FULL view image and ONE DETAIL image for each submission. –    Images should be in HIGH QUALITY JPEG format (72 dpi, 1115x 1440 pixels min). –    Images should be orientated correctly. –    Name files with artist’s last name followed by the entry number as noted on the entry form (i.e. jones1.jpeg, jones1detail.jpeg, etc). –    Video documentation should be submitted for interactive or kinetic work, via an online video link or video file burned to CD.
