As a teenager in Pittsburgh, PA she participated in an afterschool program at the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild in which bus passes and free acess to artist studios and materials were given public high school students. The positive impact of this program on her life can not be overstated. Since then she has received a number of awards and scholarships, including an opportunity to study book arts at Penland Craft School in North Carolina. She has taught book making workshops at schools and community centers throughout the country. In 2002 she walked from Georgia to Maine and mailed all of her art supplies and handmade journals home because they were too heavy.
