He worked as a sculptor's assistant for Toledo artist Jack Schmidt for two years and studied under George Bezsley and Michael Murrel at Georgia State University in Atlanta. Matthew spent alot of time in the foundry at Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham, Alabama, pouring iron and creating art. Currently he is teaching drawing and printmaking at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
