He spent most of his youth in Africa and later moved to the United States to pursue a career in art. Most of his interests are based on promoting African arts in the US and other Western countries. In order to achieve this goal he cannot rely on the normal way of looking at what is art in a given moment. He has taught in many places from the Oakland Public Schools to private art institutions. Githinji is currently artist in residence at the Museum of Children's Art (MOCHA).
