Support The Crucible's Youth Program

The Crucible's Youth Program serves 4,000 young people each year through bicycle repair programs, field trips, hands-on after-school workshops, eclectic weeklong camps, and school collaborations. Nearly half of our Youth Program participants are West Oakland residents who receive access to free and deeply discounted programs.

Here are some of our recent programs for youth:

• In February 2010, we launched our Gear Girls program, a free, after-school, girls-only program for ages eight to 11 and 12 to 16 in the areas of kinetics, foundry, welding, and art bike.

• In June 2010, 26 students from East Oakland’s International High School came to The Crucible for a workshop in MIG welding, blacksmithing, and woodworking in order to create a community chicken coop for their school.

• During 2010 Summer Camps we served more students than ever before: 671 students participated in workshops such as Blacksmithing, Adventures in Sand Casting, Fused Glass & Mosaic Mania, Extreme Gizmos, Radical Robots, and Woodturning. 274 youth participated on full scholarship – 40% of our total enrollment.

We are committed to providing scholarships and free opportunities to young people who reside in our West Oakland neighborhood. Each year we provide at minimum 30% of summer camp spaces free of charge to West Oakland youth seeking summer opportunities within walking or biking distance of their homes. You can sponsor a scholarship student or earmark a gift of any amount for The Crucible's Youth Program.
