Youth Classes
|
Through classes at The Crucible, young people gain skills that build confidence, inspire creativity, and instill responsibility. During fall, winter, and spring, The Crucible offers classes for young people ages 12 to 18. Week-long classes are offered as an exciting alternative to traditional afterschool programs. Weekend classes meet the needs of youth and parents with busy schedules and give students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a subject area. During the summer, The Crucible also offers summer camps and classes for children ages 8 to 12, as well as youth ages 12 to 18.

| AFTER-SCHOOL CLASSES THAT GET YOUR KIDS FIRED UP |
At The Crucible, young artists from 8 to 18 can explore the power of fire and enjoy creating with their hands in classes that safely teach skills to build confidence, inspire creativity, and instill responsibility.
AFTER-SCHOOL CLASSES • Mondays • 4 - 6PM • Oct 13 - Nov 17th:
Glass Flameworking – Make marbles, pendants and other glass creations overan open flame
Blacksmithing – Bend and shape glowing hot steel using the forge and anvil
Mudslinging Madness – Have fun making a mess while exploring ceramic building and glazing techniques
Radical Robots – Create your own remote-controlled robot from salvaged components
Welding – Fuse, bend and shape metal with arc welding; spew sparks and cut metal with a torch

Youth Ceramics: Mudslinging Madness!
In this class, kids can explore their artistic side and make a mess! Students will learn a variety of basic handbuilding and glazing techniques. As they learn to roll, shape, rub, pinch, impress texture, coil, and manipulate clay, kids will create imaginative small-scale projects to glaze and fire for their very own.

Youth Jazzy Clay Jewelry
In this exciting class, students will learn the basics of preparing, shaping, sculpting, cane making, and baking polymer clay. Students will use their own brightly colored clay gem and charm creations to make earrings, pendants, bracelets, and broaches. They will leave wearing their self-made accessories with pride!

Youth Wire Jewelry: Intro to Bling!
This class shows students how to use wire, colorful beads, and stones to make fun and funky jewelry. Students learn the basics of wire working, including layout and design, shaping, coiling, twisting, linking, and finishing techniques. They will also combine simple shapes to create dazzling bracelets, necklaces, pendants, and earrings that will be sure to impress.

Youth Extreme Gizmos
Learn kinetic techniques to design, engineer, and construct a mechanical sculpture, contraption, or gadget with lights and moving parts. Using new and salvaged components, you will learn how motors, lights, and switches work, how to create mechanical structures, how to create different types of motion, and how to incorporate switches to operate your very own fantastical contraption!

Youth Super Sculpture
Explore your creativity in mixed media! This class is designed to teach students about the history, cultural significance, and process of creating with reused materials. Students will learn to work with wood, metal, paper, and found objects to construct an amazing piece of art inspired by culture, myth, folklore, and their own imaginations. Students will create an original mixed media super sculpture to display at home!

Youth Rocket Car
Design, carve, construct, paint, and race your very own rocket car! You will learn how to use basic wood tools as well as gain valuable experience building, rigging, and measuring all while having a super-fun time.

Youth Woodcarving
This class introduces basic hand tools and their functions through hands-on demonstrations. You will be given expert guidance through every step of the carving process, from brainstorming to sanding, as you create a relief project of your own design. Skills gained in this class can also be applied to stonecarving. |

Youth Blacksmithing
Learn to bend and shape steel in The Crucible’s smithy as you practice traditional blacksmithing techniques using the forge and anvil. You will complete a project such as a hook, knife, fork, or spoon. |

Youth Fused Glass & Mosaic Mania!
Students will learn color, pattern, design, and form by creating beautiful glass tiles from art glass. Students will learn basic glass cutting, shaping, layout, and fusing techniques to create amazing glass pieces. You will also use kiln-fired glass to create a colorful fine art mosaic that can be used as a coaster or wall hanging. |

Youth Glass Flameworking
Discover flameworking, a type of hot glass work. You will learn to manipulate molten glass over a torch with confidence and create beautiful and unique marbles and figures out of colored glass. |

Youth Glass-Tube Sculpture: Intro to Neon
Learn the science behind neon gases as you are taught how to shape, bend, and manipulate glass tubes into letters and figures. Colored sand will be substituted for neon gas in the final project to create a brightly colored sculpture that you can display with pride. |

Youth Exploration in Metal Jewelry
Make a fashion statement! Using copper, silver, and other nonferrous metals, you’ll learn jewelry and metal art skills to create trendy jewelry of your own design. In this hands-on class you’ll be taught filing, sanding, texturing, and polishing techniques used in creating metal jewerly. You will leave this class wearing a project of your own design. |

Youth Dynamic Devices
This beginner’s course teaches you how to build an electronic kit. Choose from one of (e.g. animal or other sound effects, LED blinker, light effects, simple radio, time related, radio transmitters, musical instruments) You’ll learn how basic electronic components work, where to find them, and how to solder. At the conclusion of this class, you’ll have made your own functional electronic device. |

Youth Radical Robots
Build a simple remote-controlled robot. From the wheels up, you’ll create your robot’s shape and personality from salvaged components, mechanisms, and electrical components. You’ll also learn soldering, mechanical construction techniques, and how to remove and repurpose these items. Each student will receive a kit of motors, wheels, and a remote control toy. |

Youth Adventures in Sand Casting
In this introduction to foundry processes, you’ll turn your ideas into cast-metal sculptures as you learn the basics of metal casting. You will make a sculpture, create a mold in resin-bonded sand, and then watch as molten aluminum is poured into your mold. When your piece has cooled, you’ll open your mold to your very own finished sculpture! |

Youth Welding
Learn to fuse, cut, bend, and shape metal. This intensive introduction to stick welding (also known as arc welding) and oxyacetylene torch cutting is taught by a technical pro. In-depth demonstrations and one-on-one guidance will be given on the safe and effective operation of welding equipment as instructors help you create a small welded sculpture or project. |

Youth Lab
Taking a lab is a great way to practice and perfect the skills learned in class. In labs, you can work on class assignments or your own projects. Lab time is supervised, but does not include instruction or materials. At least two youth must be enrolled in the lab. Labs available in Arc Welding, Blacksmithing, and Glass Flameworking.
Creative Clay Exploration for Parent & Child NEW CLASS - Coming This Winter (Ceramics)
Entry-level class
Enjoy this special time together as you gently explore the world of clay together using art and fun simple movements. Price includes one adult and one child, age 3-5years old.
Clay Together for Parent & Child NEW CLASS - Coming This Winter (Ceramics)
Entry-level class
Take off together into a world of clay and fun. You'll build magical creatures and worlds for them to explore, pinch pots, masks and more. Price includes one adult and one child, age 5-7 years old.
Family Fun Weekends
