Cartoneria Classes

Cartoneria (Mexican Paper Sculpture)
Entry-level
In this class you'll learn cartoneria, the ancient and popular art form of Mexican papier-mâché. Cartoneria combines Aztec styles with Spanish techniques and is deeply rooted in ancient Mexican legends, traditions and craftsmanship. You will create fantastic and colorful sculptures from paper and recycled materials, using mythological beasts and characters as a starting point.

Sewing

 

Introduction to Sewing: A Crash Course
Entry-level
If you're a beginner, this four-hour workshop is the perfect way to become better acquainted with your sewing machine. You'll learn sewing machine operation, troubleshooting, and parts; various sewing tools and their uses; and foolproof methods for sewing a straight seam and turning corners. The class also covers types of fabric and their uses.

T-Shirt Reconstruction
Entry-level
Have tons of old t-shirts lying around? You can learn how to resize, cut and convert your old clothes and transform them into exciting new garments. This three-session workshop teaches you how to work with knit fabrics using a regular sewing machine, install ribbed cuffs and create some gorgeous new things to wear. You will also get to try out a serger. Please bring three to five t-shirts or knit items to cut apart and repurpose.

Sewing Class

Leather Working I
Entry-level
In this class you will learn techniques for working with leather, including cutting, edging, stitching, dyeing and oiling. Setting rivets, and adding hardware like buckles will also be covered as well is design and safety issues. Each student will make a belt and at least one bag (either a hand bag with a strap or a belt pouch).

Leather Working II
Prerequisite: Leather Working I
In this class you will take the techniques learned in Intro to Leather Working and expand upon them for building larger and more intricate projects.  Students will learn how to line leather, assemble pockets, and how to assemble sectional bags.  Each student will make a briefcase, knapsack, or overnight bag as their project for the course.
