The Crucible's glass program teaches many different methods for creating beautiful and functional objects from glass, with a focus on warm glass and coldworking. Among the most versatile of materials, you can work with glass rods directly in the flame of a torch; fuse and reshape pieces of glass by melting them in a kiln; cast glass into molds; drill, carve and cut cold glass; or use a high-temperature glory hole to heat and form glass with hand tools.

Glass Flameworking I
Entry-level
This fundamentals class in flameworking will teach you the basics of transforming and manipulating glass over a bench-top torch. You'll use an oxygen-propane torch to melt borosilicate glass to mold and shape it into beautiful glass marbles, sculptures, ornaments, and more! This class introduces you to the tools and equipment of glass flameworking and covers a variety of techniques including color pulling and application, sculpting, cane making, frit application and marble making.

Learn Glass Lampworking

Glass Flameworking II
Prerequisite: Glass Flameworking

In this intermediate course, we expand on the fundamentals and investigate the intricacies of borosilicate glass flameworking in more involved projects and contemporary designs. In addition to learning more progressive solid glass techniques, you will learn to use glass tubing to make blown glass perfume bottles and vessels, as well as color application to blown glass pieces, and annealing hollow form pieces.

This advanced class will build upon the techniques learned in Glass Flameworking and Continuing Techniques in Glass Flameworking. Glass Beads I
Entry-level
Learn how to make colorful glass beads from Effettre glass rods (a soft glass), using an oxy-propane torch. This class will teach you how to make a variety of bead shapes, to form and alter surface patterns and to make stringers and twisters.

Adventures in Soft Glass: Finding Your Inner Monster
Prerequisite: Glass Flameworking or Glass Beads
Extend your glass experience by learning techniques in creating open hollow forms. Monster expert Ralph McCaskey takes you on a journey in soft glass, sharing secrets to creating facial expressions with a focus on eyes. A brief historical look at monsters provides a good starting point for your project. The class culminates with embellishments, such as feathers, and electroforming techniques.

This two-day fundamentals workshop is a great way to enter the world of art glass. The techniques of fusing and slumping offer new possibilities for creating with color and form. Glass Fusing & Slumping III: Canes & Murrinis (Twice a Year)
Prerequisite:Kiln-Fired Glass-Fusing & Slumping I & II

Build on skills learned in the introductory kiln-fired glass classes with more advanced techniques and projects. This class focuses on manipulating glass using hot and cold methods. You'll learn pattern bar and cane construction, cane pulling in the glory hole and sawing murrini: all techniques that enable you create intricate patterns in glass. Using elements you've make in the glory hole, you'll complete a glass plate.

Kiln-Fired Glass Classes

Continuing Techniques in Kiln-Fired Glass: Working Deep (Twice a Year)
Prerequisite: Kiln-Fired Glass-Fusing & Slumping I & II
This class offers an advanced technique that uses the skills you learned in the introductory kiln-fired glass class. You will fuse multiple pieces of glass, creating a design embedded within the layers. You will explore the use of frits (crushed glass) and powdered glass to create a piece that captures imagery in great depth.

Architectural Applications of Plate Glass:
Using Recycled Glass (Yearly)

Entry-level class
This fast-paced, five-week class explores techniques for using broken window glass and post-consumer bottle glass to form sculptural pieces, tableware and architectural elements. Each week's session introduces a different approach to using glass: combining colors by fusing glass in the kiln, changing the shape of resulting pieces using molds, using the glory hole to re-form recycled bottles and working with the cold glass. You will learn glass chemistry, coloration and firing temperatures for each application.

Glass Powder Painting
Entry-level class
This workshop uses fusible glass powders to create "drawn" or "painted" images that are kiln fired on multiple layers of glass. The layers are then fused into a single block of glass revealing a picture or design with dimensional qualities.

Pot Melt Glass Workshop
Entry-level class
Create unique glass art using tested-compatible glass melted in a flower pot in the kiln. This process heats scrap glass to 1,650˚ F, allowing it to flow onto the kiln shelf, forming a "puddle" of multi-colored glass. You will cut and grind this unique glass into a shape that is then re-fused into a final finished art piece.

Reactive Glass Workshop

Reactive Glass Workshop
Entry-level
This workshop shows how you can use Bullseye glass to create special effects after kiln firing. Differing glass chemistries, when combined, cause reactions that change the fired glass's color and appearance. Adding metal foils further alters the look of the glass. In this workshop, you will make a number of samples to help give you a wider range of expression in your fused and slumped glass art.

Stained Glass Sculpture
(Yearly)

Entry-level
Stained glass or glass fusing experience is helpful but not required for this class. You will use a combination of fusing and stained glass fabrication techniques to make three-dimensional forms in glass. You will combine colors of glass and shape the resulting pieces in the kiln. Then you'll use copper foiling and soldering to join individual pieces to make a three-dimensional creation. The class will also explore different mold materials and fastening methods.

Kiln Cast Glass

Kiln-Cast Glass
Entry-level
Learn the ancient art of lost-wax glass casting. You will sculpt a small wax form and use it to make a mold for a one-off reproduction. This class teaches techniques for working with wax, plaster/silica mold making, de-waxing the mold, the kiln firing process, firing schedules and annealing the glass. You can complete two to three finished projects and learn basic cold working techniques.

Reverse Relief Kiln-Cast Glass
Entry-level
Capture the light in your sculpture. You will learn about the magical world of reverse relief in glass. Some knowledge about kiln-cast glass is helpful, but beginners are welcome too. You will make a relief in clay, then a wax relief from your clay. Your final project will be a solid block of glass, with a reverse relief in the back. Viewing it through the smooth, glassy front, you will see the positive image of your relief.

Kiln-Formed Recycled Glass Tableware
Entry-level
The goal of this class is to make a dinner ware set of four, including large plates, salad plates, desert plates and coasters, by repurposing and re-melting window and plate glass. You will have the coice of making your own 12" max custom molds out of clay or fiber or use the 12" and 8" clay provided. Old window glass and colors for the window glass will be included in the class, but you are welcomed to bring in your own found glass for experimentation and possible use.

The glass blowing lab is an excellent way for you to hone your skills by practicing what you have learned in class, as well as, explore new possibilities with the medium. Labs are five hours long and run for five weeks. You are free to come and go as they please during lab hours. As in class, lab members will be expected to work together and share the area as space is limited. Labs are typically non instructional, but a lab monitor will be present to answer questions, make sure every thing/one is working safely and also to help out as needed.

Glass Cold Woring and Engraving

Glass Cold Working & Engraving
Entry-level
Learn to grind and polish glass in The Crucible's expanded cold working area. Using glass blanks, you will experiment with glass cutting, drilling, carving and sandblasting techniques, as well as lathe work. You will be able to complete at least two ground and polished glass objects. Returning students will learn advanced techniques.
