The
Most Excellent and Lamentable Tragedy of
ROMEO & JULIET,
A Fire Ballet
The Crucible celebrated its 8th Anniversary with
a sizzling synthesis of dance and fire. In the dazzling tradition
of The Crucible's Fire Operas, this first-ever Fire Ballet was
a theatrical spectacle that fused ballet, classical music, aerial
performance, and the fire and industrial arts into a compelling
modernized rendition of Shakespeare's tragic tale.
From classically trained ballet dancers to
outrageous fire performers, this amazing cast included Flyaway
Productions, Flavor
Group, Wushu
West, and The Crucible’s own blacksmiths,
metal casters, and glassworkers. The legendary tale of star-crossed
lovers was set to the passionate and powerful score of Sergei
Prokofiev.

The Seven Deadly Sins, A Fire Opera
by Kurt Weill and
Bertolt Brecht
The Crucible celebrated its 7th Anniversary with
another sizzling Fire Opera. A unique fusion of Opera and Fire
Arts, featuring artists from San Francisco Opera and The Oakland
East Bay Symphony.
We saw the fiery decadence of Anna's experiences
within seven American cities as she encountered the seven deadly
sins in her quest to get money to build the family a new house
in Louisiana. Staged in the industrial vastness of The Crucible’s
56,000 square feet studio space. |

Burning Man Presents: A Beyond Belief Flambé Lounge
How does the sacred exist, and where might it be found?
Beyond belief, beyond the dogmas, creeds, and metaphysical ideas
of religion, there is immediate experience. It is from this primal
world that living faith arises. The intention of Beyond Belief
is to explore this mystery.
In keeping with our 2003 Burning Man theme, participants created
an evening of transcendent play, interactive rites and rituals,
processions, performance, shrines, labyrinths, otherworldly art
and icons, temples and visions that occupy the ambiguous territory
that lies between reverence and ridicule, faith and belief, the
absurd and the stunningly sublime.

MIKE HILL: Monuments
of Stone, Metal &
Cement
As a sculptor, Mike Hill coaxes stone to fly and steel to levitate,
yet uses the inherent weight of these media to give the viewer
the experience of monumentality. He will discuss his experimentation
with varying materials and techniques to create works that at once
defy and underscore their nature, and will talk about how exacting
craftsmanship and dedication to process serve to maintain this
dichotomy.
A full time artist since 1975, Mike Hill has created hundreds of
works for individual collectors and numerous public commissions,
including a large stained glass mural for the Ontario Airport.
In recent years, he has focused on simple shapes of stone and steel
ranging in size from small indoor pieces to large garden sculptures
weighing several tons. His works are contemplative in nature, revealing
new meanings with each viewing.

SUSAN KINGSLEY: Metalsmithing & Postmodern
Alchemy
Susan Kingsley makes objects that play perversely with desire
and culture of display,
and with the constructs of self and sexuality. Join her as she

press to transform
metal.
Susan Kingsley is an independent studio artist living in Carmel,
California. She received
a BA from the College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio and an MFA from

Crucible Lecture Series Event
ALLEGHANY MEADOWS:
Rhythm, Labor & Form: Utilitarian
Pottery
Alleghany Meadows seeks alchemy in clay. Join him as he discusses
how he uses the plasticity and subtle responses of the medium to
create objects that are intimately connected through size, form
and surface to both the human body and to nature. His lecture will
focus on the creative process within the context of utilitarian
pottery, and how his studies in Nepal and Japan have influenced
his work.
Alleghany Meadows is a studio potter in Carbondale, Colorado. He
earned an MFA from Alfred University and a BA from Pitzer College
in California. Alleghany studied indigenous pottery in Nepal as
a Watson Fellow, and apprenticed in Japan to Karatsu potter Takashi
Nakazato. He has taught workshops and lectures at Penland, Greenwich
House Pottery, Oregon School of Arts and Crafts, and the Mendocino
Arts Center. His work is collected and exhibited nationally, and
has been featured in over thirty group and solo shows.

Zone Variance Meeting: HELP BERKELEY KEEP ITS FIRE!
The Crucible, the Bay Area's ONLY non-profit educational collaboration
of arts, industry and community could be forced to close its doors
over a zoning technicality: we teach industrial arts production
in an area protected for light-industrial manufacturing. What happens
if The Crucible doesn't win a zoning variance? Berkeley and the
Bay LOSE one of their only sources of affordable industrial and
fine arts classes for adults and kids, unique gallery shows featuring
local & national artists, and our famous, headline-grabbing
Fire-Arts Festivals. In just the past 2 years, The Crucible has
taught over 1000 students how to weld, blacksmith, cast molten
bronze and glass--and has fostered an industrial arts renaissance
in the heart of the East Bay.
Help the city understand that through teaching industrial arts,
The Crucible represents and strengthens industry in Berkeley! Untie
our hands and make sure we STAY to serve thousands more! |

Home Scrap: Don Carlson • Damen
Carmen • Dawn Travers
Just what is that makes today's homes so difefrent, so eco-friendly?
It's the concentrated, conscious effort to personally interact
with the recycling process; it's desire to interrupt the industrial
cycle of manufacture-use-discard by introducing the creative hand.
Home Scrap joins three Bay Area art makers working with materials
otherwise destined for the recycling heap. The results are functional
domestic objects that say "Junk can be an aesthetic joy if
properly configured." |
