On January 16 & 17, 2004 The Crucible Celebrates its Fifth Anniversary with
a Unique Fusion of Opera and Fire Arts, with Artists from San Francisco Opera
and the American Bach Soloists Orchestra & Choir
Henry Purcell's 1689 Baroque masterpiece portrays the final moments in the life of Dido, Queen of Carthage, whose obsession with the headstrong Aeneas, Prince of Troy, leads her to commit suicide on a final, fiery pyre.
The Crucible's production fuses the elemental power of the fire arts with the intimacy of Purcell's score in a revolutionary new staging, as four opera soloists, an eight member chorus, and a twelve piece early music ensemble are accompanied by sculptors & performers weaving a backdrop of molten metal casting, glowing hot glass working, welding, torch cutting, and fire dancing.
