Aziz Malik was raised
in an American Mevlevi family. The Mevlevi Order,
founded by the 13th century mystic-poet Mevlana
Jelaluddin Rumi, has given us the Sema, a prayer
in which the Dervish can become open to receive
the energy of God. Dervish literally means doorway
and is thought to be an entrance from the material
world to the spiritual world. Aziz has combined
this practice with the fire arts, a process that
has led him on a seven-year path of discovery and
refinement, culminating in a synergy of the fire
arts and the practice of the “whirling dervish”.
Aziz trains under Postneshin Jelaluddin Loras, Pir
of the Mevlevi
Order of America. He also studies with Sheikh
Sherif Baba, head of the Rifai
Marufi Order. He has traveled the world in pursuit
of spiritual experience, and participates in many
global peace, traditional and new music, and interfaith
events
